About St Mary's Abbey

St Mary's Abbey was built in the 7th Century but was destroyed by the Reformation of the Churches by Henry V111. It's ruin stands in what is now York's Museum Gardens and it is still a building of beauty. When it was demolished a lot of the stone would have been used in other buildings and some found its way into local houses and gardens and we still do occasionally find some interesting carved pieces.
